Recess Week

For this week, we went to Gillman Barracks as our research trip. I have taken many useful images which have strong connections to my trend prediction.

BIRDHEAD's unique documentary approach entails lensing a huge volume of photographs that capture a board range of subjects, including the diaristic snapshot of their daily lives, activities, and travel.

If you look at something from a different angle, you look at it from a different point of view. Some of the more absorbing photographs are often ordinary things viewed from a different perspective. As this picture depicts simply just picture, but if you look at it from to far angle and be more creative. It actually tells a story. Therefore, to raise new possibilities, new question, to regard old problems from a new angle, require wild imagination and think creatively.

Book of Maurizio Savini

I am intrigued by the artworks of Maurizio Savini, so I went to library and found his book to do futher sutdy of his artworks. In the modern world, economics and politics are dominated by dichotomies, fractures and obvious contrasts. He creates the artworks by using chewinggum as clay to form facinating sculptures, some of his work frames inside shatterproof glass as shown above which illustrates the modern using of technologies and zagiazes.

To conclude this session,  the desire to have a better lifestyle constantly increases as people are never satisfied, and are often finding ways and means to develop something better.

This action eventually lead to the rise of fetishism. In reference to the picture above from Gillman Barracks , it depicts a modern photographer expressing his lifestyle. I personally feel that the image is an illustration of fetishism, as the woman is nude, and lying in a cloud setting. It symbolizes something spiritual, and the grey color accompanied by it brings out a sexual yet relaxed mood.

Based on my research in fetishism in fashion, the fetishism is a theory of substitution to our daily lives as one of the inevitable element to modern living style. As I started to research deeper into the topic, I grew more interested as for me, I did not see it just as something to be applied in fashion, but also a new way of life.

WEEK SEVEN

Androgynous Fashion

In this research, I have decided to research on androgynous fashion and discuss important considerations in the development of my own trend forecasting in modern living.

How has a growing acceptance of androgynous fashion impacted upon upcoming trends?

The hypothesis defined for research will help me answer this question. By the end of this research, the I will be able to understand the significance of normalizing androgyny and how it propels acceptance in the concept of gender fluid fashion. This will in turn help me to create a fashion trend that celebrates androgyny and endorses gender fluidity, in hope of encouraging people with gender identity issues to embrace their own identity and be proud of who they feel they are.

In the local context, we have Pink Dot SG. It is an annual, non-profit which started in 2009, in support of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community in Singapore.

In the global context, there is a RuPaul's Drag Race. It is an American reality competition television series produced by World of Wonder for Logo TV, and beginning with season nine, For VH1. The show documents RuPaul in his search for "America's next drag superstar" which started in 2009.

Celebrities Popularise Androgynous Fashion

"Celebrities and fashion icons are influential in normaslising androgynous fashion and making it more accepting in society."

The research question of how androgynous clothing is promoted in the society which eventually led to its popularity in the fashion industry. Also, trends that celebrities set influences the popularity of androgynous clothing and the purchasing decision of major fashion retailers as celebrities help drive sales for fashion houses by increasing public awareness of their pieces (Christina. 2015, March 3).

With the knowledge of how and what influences the consumers in their purchases, I can utilise this trend to promote androgynous clothing with modern concepts and reach a stage where people dressing effeminately become a norm, allowing freedom to openly express themselves.

WEEK SIX

Fetishism in Fashion

The modern lifestyle increases of desiresConsequently, leading to fetishism. In this research, I have researched on fetishism in fashion. The fetishism is a theory of substitution to our day to day life as one of the inevitable element to modern living style. It draws my attention.

Book of Fetishism In Fashion

Romanticism
Glorified and visualized with suffering slim bodies, porcelain skin, dramatic hair, theatrical black garments and saccharine detailing; with a fetish for haberdashery, bows, corsets, handkerchiefs and lace.

Regionalism
The handmade and the hand-embellished. Comical folk dance costumes, with feminine puffed sleeves, fetishistic crinolines, embroidered knitwear, romantic aprons and provincial haberdashery. In a refrain of very bright and optimistic colours.

Floral Fetish
By Lidewij Edelkoort

Floral Fetish
The act of bondage influenced daring fashions and excessive lingerie,  flesh-coloured flowers are tied with fine rope or skin-like rubber bands to subvert their aesthetics and forever transform ideas with fastenings.

Floral Fetish
The new form of an erotic bouquet.

In conclusion, instead of going to my usual way online researching.  I have decided to begin my research in the library instead. Usually, I will not pay much attention to my surroundings as I am always focused on my electronic devices. However, this school task has restricted me from using my electronic devices which make me realised the simplicity and beauty of books.

In this book of  'Fetishism In Fashion', such beautiful man made fabric embellishment, textile manipulation and fabric used effectively stunned me into silence as the modern light illuminates the human fetishes into fashion beautifully and pictures above cast an ethereal reflection on the romanticism and regionalism.

I have not seen such unique design used to illustrate fetishism before. I used to think that choosing exquisite and emotional materials were boring and unimaginative as I routinely use the same materials but this book has showed me otherwise. Resources from local are regional and retail is just around the corner. I took down as the notes, appreciating the ideas as a wave of floral peace and serenity washes past me. It was definitely a fruitful research and great exploration for my trend prediction.
